I have this thing about looking up meanings of phrases and the one you used tonight, 'on his tod' apparently was named after an American jockey of the 19th Century called 'Tod' Sloane. He was a brilliant rider and won many races both in USA and the UK but fell out of favour after some illegal betting scandal and became a bit of a solitary figure. Hence Tod (Sloane). On his own rhyming slang. Just a bit of useless info for you. I bet you needed to hear that.
