I've produced a handy 'look up table' to show the proposed *minimum* prices of various alcoholic beverages.

For instance a pint of beer at 4% = 91p

and a bottle of wine at 13.0% = £3.90

and a bottle of scotch at 40% = £11.20

There will be no effect on drinking habits.

There never is. That's why alcohol taxes are so reliable, as is tobacco tax.

Drinkers who are not well off will find the money from somewhere.

Probably from their children's clothing or food budget.

Any legislation to artificially limit drinking habits is misguided and potentially disastrous.

DT, antifreeze now has an additive which makes it taste so vile that it is undrinkable.
It can no longer be used to poison a spouse....
So the Austrians will have to stop using antifreeze in their wines??
it will mean the return of the booze cruise and cheap imports fom europe. The government (any government) needs to stop 'mini' supermarkets - we are overloaded with them in London - from selling alcoholto to all and sundry at any time day and night. I've just been in one and 4 cans of strong lager were sold to two guys absolutely out of their head, it's not even midday. At least the major supermarkets seem to have a policy for verifying the age of a customer and I've never seen drunks getting in, let alone getting served in our local Sinsbury's, Tesco's etc. Another tax hitting the general public because governments (local and national)/police/courts can't deal with the root cause of a problem.
It never ceases to amaze me how much fags go up and smokers still find the money to buy them, it will be no different for drinkers.
Another thought.....what is this extra tax going to be spent on......not fighting the problem that's for sure!!!!
"two guys absolutely out of their head, it's not even midday"

Yeeaahhh, but ... it is Friday.
I don't think it's extra tax novice, the seller will keep the money.
Won't affect me...I don't do drugs apart from what the doc. gives me to prevent my early demise....nor do I pay tax on things I don't need..........

What a miserable old g1t I am....Heh.heh.
