Travelling to Furteventura

My daughter and her boyfriend are travelling to Furteventura in June. Are they covered by an E111 card while in the country in case they get ill. TIA

No, E111 hasn't been around for some years, they need to apply for an EHIC card. However it's only for very basic health cover in the EU for emergencies, it's never intended to replace proper travel insurance.

I hadn't realised it was so long ago, E111s were discontinued in 2006.

Sorry meant an ehic card. Hubby reckons they dont need one as they aren't in the eu but i think they would be better off taking it just in case. It will be her first holiday without me or her dad.

Dont rely on the card ... get some travel Insurance £20 will cover both of them.
I have been to Fue many times and love it ... can't wait to go back.

Take the card and get travel insurance.

Even if she has a card registered to her name it will mean nothing if she doesn't have it with her.

Health Travel Insurance Fuerteventura

All British Citizens with UK passports travelling to Fuerteventura and the Canary Islands will need one of the new European Health Insurance Cards (EHIC). These have now replaced the old E111 form! EHIC cards are free, and very easy to obtain, either online via the weblink right, or by obtaining an EHIC form from your local post office. EHIC entitles UK travellers to emergency medical treatment whilst in Spain (or in Spanish territory which the Canaries fall under) on the same terms as Spanish nationals. However, the EHIC will not cover things like on-going medical treatment, medical repatriation or non-urgent medical treatment. The Department of Health (see weblink right) advises additional comprehensive medical and travel insurance alongside obtaining your EHIC.

Yes but please be fully aware you do need travel insurance too - the EHIC card only covers for small things like medication or minor treatment, if it was needed for an accident or travelling back to the UK, it would not cover this. We were pleased we had travel insurance when we had our travel document bag stolen at the airport there with passports and flight tickets and pesetas (at the time) Its a lovely island and normally not much crime (we have been several times) but please tell her to be extra careful with her bags, my husband just put his travel document bag down on the counter to sign car hire agreement at a kiosk inside the airport and next minute the bag had gone ........ turned up the next day, been found in a rubbish bin, without the money, but thankfully tickets and passports intact. Tell her to have a lovely holiday and enjoy the beaches!

They both have an ehic card and travel insurance. I would never let her travel without insurance. Thank you all for your helpful answers. Will make her aware she needs to be street wise which she is anyway.
