What time is his last food before bed and is he having anything which could aggravate him, especially if lying down soon after like fizzy drinks? Food diary is a good idea.
Could he be getting himself worked up about something enough to make him sick at night sometimes?
If he is being ill so often then well worth getting him checked out.

langara, could he have migraines? That could very well make him sick during the night and then he could sleep it off and feel fine the next day. Worth watching to see if there is anything triggering it as others have said.
