Has anyone had scans with this company? I'm interested in having the screening for Stroke and Aortic Aneurysms but I've no idea how reliable they are. Any ideas?

No I haven't.

The "stroke" screening will be a "little chat", BP and blood tests (lipid profile) but the scan for aortic Aneurysm mat be worth the effort.

Thanks for that. What puts me off is the 'don't miss out on this exclusive offer' technique. They also persuade you to have all the tests as that works out much cheaper but if the other ones are indeed simply common sense pep talks about diet etc it certainly isn't worth paying the extra for them. May be I will go for the aortic one ...
Don't they also offer a Doppler Ultrasound on the Carotid Arteries.
I wouldn't bother. This outfit have been slated in the press and if you Google for reviews you will see many consumer complaints and even reports by doctors who say it is a waste of time and money.
pene.....if that is the case then a Doppler would be useful.............

Tups.......it is your money......if you can afford it........why not?

I'm thinking about it .... Yes, I can afford it but only because I don't waste my money. I have no no statistics on how many people they have actually helped with early diagnosis.
The quality of their product might not equal the tenacity of their hard-sell techniques.

Once you have one scan you'll never get rid of them :-)
I haven't used them but my daughter temped in one of their call centres once and they were well briefed on handling mentions of the umpteen 'watchdog' type articles they were on the receiving end of.

And their targeting of particular prospects and 'installation of fear and uncertainty' is quite unpleasant
Well, just taking an ultrasound and or CT scan of the abdomen for the detection of abdominal aortic aneurysm which is a part of the examination.

OK these aneurysms are not common, although the incidence has increased over the past 20 years, but here is the bottom line ........if they remain undiagnsed and rupture..........the death rate is about 98% of ALL the patients.......even though they were symptom free before the episode.
Now if these are picked up early and resected, then the death rate following resection is less than 1%.

Is that worth £200 or so?

Your decision.
how old are you? i think they are rolling out a national programme of aaa screening for over 65s
My name is Craig Wilmott and I'm the Marketing Executive at Life Line Screening. I want to address some of the questions and concerns in this thread.

There's lots of debate about the benefits of health screening. We think it's better to try and understand as much about your health as possible, rather than remain in the dark, and health screening is an effective means of achieving this. There are many different types of health screenings available but ours focuses on cardiovascular health. By understanding your cardiovascular risks you can take measures to help prevent serious illnesses such as stroke and heart disease occurring. Previous customers have also reported making healthier lifestyle choices following their screenings such as eating a healthier diet, stopping smoking or taking more exercise.

The NHS's AAA pilot scheme is currently only available to men over 65 in certain areas of the UK. We think it's really positive step and are totally behind it, we just hope the public sector cuts won't see the scheme withdrawn or scaled down.

We exist to offer people another choice. You can't walk into your GP and schedule these tests without symptoms but why wait for symptoms to occur? Why not spot them before hand and take action to prevent symptoms? Public health policy in the UK is too focused on diagnosing illnesses from symptoms. We think the focus should be on prevention and encouraging people to make healthier lifestyle choices.

Take a look at the Office of National Statistics for information about the level of cardiovascular disease in this country. Or the World Health Organisation's website for a picture on the global stage. It's a serious problem on a massive scale and although it doesn't make for 'comfortable' reading the evidence is there for all to see. The choice on whether to face these things or ignore them is of course down to the individual.
