How long does a UK passport need to be valid for before travelling?

I am travelling to the canary islands in may, i come back to the UK on the 27th of May but my passport expires on the 12th of June, will i be able to travel on this passport or will i have to renew it before i go?

As it is within europe it only has to be in date for your return journey.
Unless I knew that I was never going to travel abroad again, I'd still get it renewed before travelling in May - plenty of time to do that if you act now.

You don't 'lose' any time, the new one will be valid for 10 years from the date of expiry of the old one.
(waits for somebody to pop up with the traditional (and incorrect) 6months answer)

If you're returning to UK on May 27th and your Passport is valid until June 12th I don't see the problem???
Renew it after you get back - no problems with the dates given!!
Only that it can take a few weeks (at the height of summer) to get a renewal processed - so you would be without a passport for rather longer than if you act now.

The expiry date means exactly what it says....
I also heard that you have to have 6 months clear.
