15 year old lad in school uniform stood in the store drinking from a bottle of coca cola, then he put it on a shelf and went to look at the comics, he was 6feet tall and in his school uniform and so i had to tread carefully, given his apparent age and all,
I asked him if the coke was his, he said no, I told him I had seen him drinking it, he said he had bought it at 'a shop down there' (that would have been River Island or Sports Direct) I said no he hadn't, the bottle was still freezing cold and so it was from our chiller, he admitted it was, I told him to go and pay for it, he said he had no money but that his mother was shopping in River island, what would you have done?

He may not have been so privileged as you think. If he was not allowed coca cola, he probably thought he would have one secretly, while his mother wasn't watching him, especially if his friends drink it all the time. However, he of course should be stopped from stealing now before it escalates. If he gets away with it once he will try it again. So you certainly did the right thing dotty. Telling lies to get away with misdemeanours is natural. Everyone does it.
