yes I could ask in the tech dpt but I prefer to ask Chatterboxers for an honest unbiased opinion[with apologies]
Our computer is over 10 yrs old and on its knees, friends have bought a Toshiba Satellite [ silly me thought that as a dish !] lap top and say its quite fast , they like it and now their son has bought one but in the other camp someone [ with 3 kids & attitude] said she bought a Toshiba a while back[dont know the model] and the screen shattered whilst it was under warranty and they refused to fix it said it wasnt covered, so now I have mixed feelings.
Any thoughts /ideas that would help me make up my mind pls ?

First things first: do you want a laptop or a desktop? How useful is portability to you?
I had a Toshiba Satellite for about 7 years before I bought my new PC last year. It does still work okay but I decided that as I didn't need to take my PC anywhere, and I wanted a larger screen (the older I get the worse my eyesight is) I bought an all-in-one Samsung with a 23" screen.
Good swap!
As Mark has hinted: do you *need* a laptop? If not, you'll get more for the same money with a desktop. Or, you'll pay less for the same spec.
as a laptop the one i have is pretty good, a Dell Inspiron, does what it says on the tin, and not too expensive.
I have a Toshiba Satellite A660 series about a year old...love it to bits.....get a laptop is my advice....you can take them anywhere....even to the toilet if you are so mindful.....or out into the garden this lovely spring weather, beautiful.

No problem getting to grips with the technology and I'm a 78 year old skinny surfer....well I'd be a silver surfer but ...well you know what I mean ;-)
not meaning to accuse but screens do not usually explode on their own.i am on my second toshiba as i needed more spec and donated my old one which is still doing the business.there are some great deals from pc shops online.i would be reluctant to use electrical superstores myself from past (bad)experiences and would use a local computer shop after comparing prices.good luck
I have had a Dell Inspiron 1545 for 7 years which has served me well until today. I phoned Dell and their technician took control of my computer and put it right in a few minutes. He then sent me an e-mail which will enable me to contact them without having to spend money on a phone call.

thanks everyone for thoughts /advice, I knew I would get straight answers from the A/Bers its a lap top for me then and not from a superstore either, they try and fob you off with the cheaper discontinued models.Went to Ideal home yesters and not one computer stand in sight.
At present I am doing the easiest City &Guilds comp class and their computers are so up to date at the Adult College I can do so much on them that I cant do at home at present time.
