New Volkswagen small car

In the motoring supplement "In Gear " in today's Sunday Times a new small Volkswagen is reviewed. The price is £10,390 and there is no road fund tax until it is i year old and then it is only £20 yearly.
I don't have a car now, but if I wanted one I would give this a trial.
Recently there was a Chinese car on the market for about £10,000.
Japanese cars over 3 years old are not permitted to be driven in Japan and they are sent to the UK where they are available at reasonable prices.

Thats not quite true.

But after 3 years the car has to go through a vigorous MOT type test, which is expensive to have done, so it is often more economical to sell your car (often for export) and buy a new one.

But i dont believe there is a an actual LAW stopping you driving a car over 3 years old.

Thats what I though at first, but there is a new car called the Volkswagen Up which sells for £8,000 or so.

And this review in the Telegraph (from November last year so not April fool) does say the first years road tax is zero, with £20 a year afterwards.
