Jury Service
8 Answers
Hi,
I'm new to the forum and am unsure if this is the correct place to put my inquiry.
My question is this; I recently started my first jury service (just this Monday) and was chosen for a case. This case has now been completed and I was given the choice to stay on to potentially be chosen again for another case. I decided that I would like to stay on and complete my service fully.
I was given this choice as my employer will be paying me for the full 10 days I am due for jury (only 8 really as Friday 6th and Monday 9th are bank holidays). However as there are so few cases this week, in part because of Easter, I was informed that I would not be needed until Tuesday 10th.
Technically this means I’ll be at home doing nothing for two full days. Was I wrong to agree to stay on? It was so interesting seeing the process in this first case I would not mind the opportunity to serve on another. I am really still on jury service simply waiting to see if my name is chosen again.
If anyone can weigh in on this on where I fall really, it would be helpful.
A point to note, there was a lad there who’s job wasn’t paying for his service and they told him just to return to work on Thursday.

I don't think you were wrong to stay on.
However, it would be a courtesy to your employer to confirm that you are not needed for the two days, and to offer to return to work - they may say no, but that's their call.

I've done two lots now, the first one was a bit uncomfortable with the defendants family and friends constantly staring us out throughout the case.
The second case the two defendants were giving me the staring treatment again so I thought "Feck em, if they want to play it that way then let's have it" ... Guilty as charged!
