Wash at 30 degrees

Don't know if this is the right place to ask this (Home & Garden? Technology?) but I'll plough on.

Partner has nice M & S overcoat, v. smart from their Collezione collection- ie not exactly cheap. However, it's a wee bit grubby and the problem is the label says it can't be dry cleaned, and is machine washable at 30 degrees. My washing machine won't wash at such a low temperature except on the silk cycle, which will barely touch it. Can I risk washing it at 40, or is it a case of a washboard over the bath? This is becoming a more frequent problem with clothes washable at very low temps. I'm certainly not buying a new washing machine while my current one is in v.good condition.

yeah i would put it in on the silk cycle - and just wash it twice if needs be ;-)

Yep silk cycle with maybe just a tad more washing liquid than usual.

do you use liquid washing stuff? Rub a little on the grubby bits before putting it in the machine. Wash straight away.
Check your machine instructions too. Mine has the facility to adjust the temperature and spin on any of the programs so I can use the cottons long vigorous wash which defaults to 90 deg at 30 deg or even cold.

Thanks again. Twice washed on silk cycle with liquid detergent and an extra rinse and spin. Perfect result.

Not having a go at you here Nodger but doesn't that defeat the point of why they want things washed at 30 (never seen the point myself). You wash something at 30 but end up having to wash twice thus using double the amount of water.

evian, nodger's machine hasn't got a 30 deg vigorous wash...hence the need to wash a non silk item twice to get the dirt out...surely a more environmentally responsible thing to to than trash a perfectly good washing machine and buy a new one????

I know Woof, I wasn't criticising Nodger, more the way they are trying to convince everyone to wash at 30. I bet there's loads of people who have machines that don't go that low on a normal cycle.

Don't try washing some of the new synthetics any hotter....you will end up with a creased mess.

I've got a coat which says to wash at 30 degrees but when I tilt the washing machine at that angle it doesn't work properly.
