I live in London....don't think anything is cheap here......and even more so during Olympics/Paraolympics/Jubilee celebrations.
i always found the Presidents Hotel in russell square to be cheap and cheerful, its a bit dated but its bang in the centre of London and if its only for a decent breakfast and somewhere to lay your head then its worth a try x
If you only want to be a tourist I would not visit at that time of year. All hotels are going to be selling their rooms at the top price and it is going to be very, very crowded. Public transport will be pushed to the limit and you really won't be able to appreciate your visit as much as you would at a quieter time.
Oh God, stay away, the transport system will probably come to a standstill, all the tourist attractions will be jam packed, and, to top it all off, you'll be royally ripped off into the bargain.
Don't be so down on it. It's a bit like going to Ikea on a Saturday - if you prepare yourself for it it will be fine.

If you're just a tourist you're not going to be in a rush so it doesn't matter if you have to wait longer for a tube and if prepare yourself for it being hugely busy them you won't have any shocks. It could be fun being part of it while the Olympics are on, i think London will have a good buzz about it.
it will be buzzy but it will be hugely expensive to find a place to stay anywhere central - prices have doubled for the Olympics

I'd really try to avoid that period if I were you. Or stay out of town but somewhere near an underground/London overground train line and commute in.

thanks everyone
i got a hotel in harrow for 5 nights, return train tickets and an oyster card with £15 on it for £218
WOW!!!
Thats sounds like a great deal youve got. I was going to suggest staying just outside London as we did, and travelling in for the day as we did. It worked out cheaper than staying in a London Hotel as my son (who lives in a flat in inner London) says even some top hotels there are pretty cr*p especially for the price they charge.
