Holding the information is not an offence.

Disseminating it may be.

yes and this is part of the argument under Government debate.

Many companies discard their data pretty quickly, such as e-mails, and that is what the police and security want in part, a minimum time holding to prevent dumping.

That I have no issue with.

What I do have an issue with is the police and security having the uncontrolled ability to see with whom I am communicating; yes they need a warrant to access the messages - that's ok. However, I am of the strong opinion that if they have reasonable suspicion that I (or Mohammed Abdullah bin Salah) is up to no good, then they should have to apply for a warrant to analyse my/his communications and present their reasons/early evidence. Thereby this protects my (and others) personal rights of being in a free country.........

Philosophically, I don't think that is particularldificult to understand.......and it appears the Government (and authorities) are making a right meal out of it. The Labour Party did so as well but for even wider sweeping powers....
