No need to fork out any money. AVG free edition, Zone Alarm, Spybot Search & Destroy and Malwarebytes is all I need.

I've never liked McAfee.
Norton used to be good, then it was cr@p for many years, now it's pretty good.
Personally I prefer Kaspersky PURE.
Why pay for Internet Security when you can get it for free.?

I use Microsoft Security Essential (MSE) and the free download of Malwarebytes.

Ever since I abandoned Norton, and went for (free) Microsoft Security Essentials, my computer has speeded up.
fender....I've have not observed my computer being slow.

I'm not computer literate so all I can say is that I've used Norton on my PC's for the last 8 years and never had any problems.
Also when I worked for BT Norton was their chosen security software.
craft....It's just a guess that you have paid-out a few hundred pounds in 8yrs. Perhaps even half the price of a new computer.

AVG for me ...
Ron Norton for the year is £29.
If 'Norton' is at present costing £29.p.a. Eight years ago it was possibly say £20. Let us therefore assume the average price has been £25.p.a. which, if multiplied by eight, then equals £200.

I feel sure that one can purchase a reasonable 'Laptop' for £400.
