Hi, I'm posting on behalf of a close friend who has lost his job and isn't having much luck finding how to deal with his debts. He has a mortgage, credits cards etc and has applied for benefits this week.
He isn't having much luck with finding out how to deal with debt repayments and has been told to change his bank and cancel all direct debits and then let them take him to court. This is from a debt counselling agency. This sounds like a bad idea to me, he also has a school age daughter that lives with him.

If anyone is able to help with names of organisations that could direct him towards a way of dealing with this then I would be very grateful!!

it sounds like both poor and illegal advice, plus what bank other would touch him! here is a free source of help ...

Try the Citizens Advice Bureau for advice. They are good. They would help in getting CC interest halted.
Ask him to get benefit payment paid into a Post Office Account, then he can see what available money he has.
Does he get Working Tax Cred/Child Benefit/Child Tax Cred for his child? Although I have no idea on what bearing that would have on anything.
National Debtline loads of info, online, and phone lines... letter templates etc as well... Really could not have got straight myself without their help

Thank you very much for your answers, I personally thought it sounded a bit of a strange thing to do regarding his DD's. He's been directed to the National Debtline, so hopefully that will help.
Thanks again and have a good weekend all!! :)
