The egg. Before there was any chicken in the world there was the ancestor of the chicken, which was not, itself, a chicken. That's evolution. When the first chicken hatched, the egg had been laid by that creature that was not itself a chicken . The first chicken hatched from that egg !
The Sri Lankan newspaper was wrong. The egg came first, it just didn;t get expelled by the hen.
"Early creature" eh. That far back the lifecycle would have been such that it would be difficult to pinpoint when eggs as seperate defined things came into existence. So the question of eggs cease to be valid if you go that far back. Go back far enough and the early life, as eukaryotic cells, would have multiplied by mitosis. Do you still refer to them as creatures ?
Prechicken... laid egg with final piece of dna in offspring to be full chicken
At this point Colonel Sanders had a brainwave and the rest is a horrible history
