Subaru Impreza - Noise?

Hello,

Just wondering what gives Impreza's that excellent roaring gurgle? I love the sound of imprezas too much.

Is it just the exhaust system or something like that?

It's mainly down to the particular engine used. A flat 4 boxer.

Paul, you ignore mdoo98, and carry on enjoying the noise of the mighty scooby engine note! As Coobeastie has said, it is the flat four engine configuration that gives that distinctive note, often 'enhanced' by the owner having fitted a large bore back box or complete 'zorst system.

I can't really see why the engine would make any difference to the sound, after all the old VW beetles sounded real distinctive but if you fit a more normal exhaust system instead of the standard twin units it sounds much less different. Other Subaru models use the boxer engine and don't sound like the impreza, its probably all down to correct tuning of the exhaust systems and free flow open air filters etc....

Hmm i wouldn't mind "modding". But i can't as i require a load carrying vehicle like the Primastar i recently purchased.

Do you think my Primastar would sound good with a black bore box?

The noise is down to a combination of the flat 4 boxer engine and the exhaust fitted on a scoobydo as stated by Impret-Sir. When I first drove one it felt and sounded like it was missing to me until i got used to it - after I planted my right foot for the first time I soon realised it wasn't missing. ;o)
