I have a Maxtor portable hard disk (3200) that has decided to die on me (power fault).I need to recover the files from it and it has been suggested I buy a caddie. has anyone used these devices and if so how easy is it to install a disk into them? I have tried contacting the manufacturer in the US but they are choosing not to reply
Thanx

Dead easy - open the box, unplug disk and remove. Open new box, put disk in, plug in, close box.
open the box BEFORE you buy a new caddy

we got a batch of usb/firewire HDDs a while ago (long enough ago that we now have a faulty one)

same as yours ... psu faulty
when opened the SATA lead is bog standard but the power connector isn't the usual job ... it's some sort of displacement stamped connection ...
we managed ... but it was a soldering iron job to get it into a new box
A lead like this can be useful if you just want to get data then put the drive in storage or in another machine; otherwise a caddy as suggested.
