Bikes on trains

We're supposed to be riding a portion of the South Downs Way tomorrow (weather permitting) Even if its a dry day I expect the conditions on the track to be pretty poor.

The idea is to catch the train back from Shoreham. Our bikes will be filthy, I've not heard of this happening before but could they refuse us travel if the bikes are muddy?

I guess we could jet wash them at a petrol station before travel if this is the case!

I don't know about mud, but I do know that not all trains permit bikes - worth checking first.

Cycles aren't permitted on the following trains from Shoreham-by-Sea:

0549 to Victoria - cycles cannot be carried beyond Hove
0622 to London Bridge - cycles cannot be carried beyond Hove
0701 to London Bridge - cycles cannot be carried beyond Hove
0712 to Victoria - cycles cannot be carried beyond Hove
0731 to Victoria - cycles cannot be carried beyond Hove
0746 to Brighton - cycles cannot be carried on this train
0752 to Brighton - cycles cannot be carried on this train
0759 to Victoria - cycles cannot be carried beyond Hove
0815 to Brighton - cycles cannot be carried on this train
0824 to Brighton - cycles cannot be carried on this train
0832 to Brighton - cycles cannot be carried on this train
0843 to Victoria - cycles cannot be carried beyond Hove
0904 to Brighton - cycles cannot be carried on this train
1646 to Southampton Central - cycles cannot be carried on this train
1716 to Portsmouth Harbour - cycles cannot be carried on this train

Rail staff my refuse to carry any passenger or luggage (including bikes) where the condition of the person/baggage/bike is such as to cause inconvenience to others, or soiling to the property of the rail company or of other people.Having run a railway station I know that that such refusals are rare, but that they do occur.

thanks Chris, only just seen your reply.

We did the ride and cleaned the bikes up as best we could. Even though we got to the station when one of the restricted trains stopped the guard was lenient and let us on. There were quite a few other bikes on the train too.

I think its a case of a little bit of politeness and courtesy going a long way! (if you're lucky)
