When I talk to people with nice accents, I sometimes wish I sounded like ...

(blushes)

... Joanna Page.

I think she has the loveliest voice.

Would you like a different accent? or an accent at all?

I have a strong, south Wales accent (even though I haven't lived there for 25 years). Luckily, we now live in Hereford so no one notices. When we lived in Aylesbury (and I was teaching) it was a nightmare.
I also have what eccles called a "very neutral, central southern accent" (it was broad Black Country until I was 6, but that had to go when my family moved to Hemel).

I'd settle for Bill Nighy as a replacement ('wrecked but slightly posh') ...
I used to love Moira Stewart's accent and from much further back Eartha Kitt, both quite smokey voices. How can anyone not have an accent? Do they mean that there is such a thing as an accentless voice? Even HM has an accent! Interesting that P. William has a much more ordinary voice that of his over-elocuted wife.
> How can anyone not have an accent?

Quite! Everyone has an accent. Received pronunciation, and what the press have stupidly termed "estuary English", are accents like any other.
Does anyone remember Joan Greenwood? I would like to sound like her, but as it is I sound like an old West country apple woman.
Drink up thoy zoyderrrr!
I have a sort of Hev Yew Gotta Loight Boy accent ..but can turn on the posh when needed :)
What accents do people dislike? My personal bete-noir is the Linda Snell off the Archers type, a walking advert for cheap elocution.
> but can turn on the posh when needed.

Fortunately, that's never.
sherrardk - which part of Wales did you grow up in?

My husband is Welsh. His sister has been living in London for around 10 years and has retained her strong accent. My husband lived in Bristol for a while and made a conscious effort to get rid of his Welsh accent. People in his work in Cardiff couldn't believe he was Welsh, they thought he was English lol. He has really got rid of his accent.

I like Joanna Lumley's accent too. I also like Yorkshire accents as they sound very warm and friendly.
Strange ..my eldest brother emigrated to Oz getting on for forty years ago .
He still has a broad Norfolk accent .He still says ...Hew are yer dewin between ya ....arr ye awroight tigether .
I'm happy with the way I speak.

Henry Higgins Said An Englishmans way of speaking absolutely classifies him. the moment he talks he makes some other Englishman despise him.

I totally agree.
Come on mic I'm waiting on your thread :-)
I`dl like to have a French accent. I think that is so attractive (in men) Unfortunately I have a kind of posh southern English accent. Such is life.
