£160... Is This Too expensive?

The centre diamond in my engagement ring fell out. Luckily I found it in a box of old photos I was rummaging through.

I've been quoted £160 to reset it and reinforce the claws. It's 18 carat gold and is 37 years old.

Is this a decent price please?

I don't think it is far wrong, you want a decent job done , this is a skilled job.
The item in question is not only expensive but has great sentimental value.
You could try another jeweller for a quote and see if there is much diffrence.
But this is something where the cash is secondary to the personal value.

Get a second quote but I think it is not too bad. When they retip the claws a certain amount of gold is used. You should have your stones checked every year. Two years at most.

Well I think that is an awful lot of money just to put the stone back in.? I would go to another jewellery shop and ask them if I was you. good luck

^Agree with eddie, as you want a good job done on a sentimental piece of jewellery, I'd have thought it's a reasonable price.

To give an idea , I had an antique pen with a sterling Silver band. The band had parted along the original join , I was quoted £150 just to Silver Solder the band back together.

Thanks guys. I think i'll stick with this jeweller, as I know they will do a good job. Haven't got the cash at the moment but I'll get it back and keep it until I do. Yes, it's very sentimental and I want to leave it to my lttle granddaughter.

Oh (works in jewellers) says it depends on the claws, but that price is not unreasonable if the claws need replacing.

I lost one of the rubies from my ring in a cupboard in my daughter's house. When I claimed for it on my insurance, I was told that because I was not indoors when it happened, I was not covered! Absolute nonsense, as if I would take the ring off every time I left the house.

I would say the diamond had been lost and claim for a replacement on my house insurance ;-)
On a serious note, you say 'reinforce the claws' this tells me that the present claws are too small and need to be enlarged , in view of this the quote seems even more reasonable .
