Yes, its the standard (i.e. proper) way to do it. Not with HTML, but with CSS:

add this to your html, in the head:

<style type="text/css">
a {
color: black;
}
a:visited {
color: red;
}
a:hover {
color: yellow;
}
</style>

no, it definitely works with mozilla browsers too. they're far more standards based than IE6 is. your problem is elsewhere.
