A GameShark or "Action Replay System" as they're known here in Europe is a cheat device, usually consisting of a disc and a memory card dongle, that's used to put cheats into a game that aren't otherwise available.

The codes that you've found can only be entered using one of these devices. Essentially they're advanced hex editors that modify the game code loaded into memory in some way, which can have various effects like giving you Infinite Health or Ammunition, or unlocking content, depending on which codes you put in.

Head over to http://www.codejunkies.com for more information on codes and appropriate devices. American codes may only work on the US (NTSC) version of the game, and not the UK (PAL) version.

The Thing doesn't have any traditional button-entered cheat codes like some games, so if you want to use cheats on this game, buying an Action Replay or similar device is your only option.
