There is a story, not quite sure if it's apocryphal, of a bridge game in America in the 20s. A husband and wife were partnering each other. On one hand the wife was dealer. To her delight she picked up a hand containing all thirteen spades. Forgetting that as dealer she would not be on lead, she decided to go for the highest possible score and opened 7 No Trumps. She did not take a single trick. At the end of the deal her husband rose, took out his little Derringer from his waistcoat pocket and shot her straight through the heart. He was duly arraigned for capital murder. The judge, a bridge player, on hearing the facts of the matter, dismissed the case on the grounds of justifiable homicide.
