Wine glasses and bad luck

One of my friends is moving into a new flat with her boyfriend and they don't have much between them so far but she was looking at getting some wine glasses but he is very much opposed to this as he says it is meant to be bad luck to buy your own wine glasses before your wedding and that they are meant to be a wedding gift.
I have never heard of this one and was wondering if any of you had or is he getting it confused with something else or just plain being stingey and not wanting to buy wine glasses when they could buy something else instead?

I haven't heard of that. You can get wine glasses pretty cheap nowadays. Maybe they should buy some of these. My favourite wine glass :)

That's really cool puddle-duck! I actually want one of those for myself, seen as the straw in the bottle method is usually frowned upon at dinner parties.

Crystal should be a wedding present... sturdy plain glasses are fine... its part of the three breakages family of superstition... not to have things that break easily before the wedding in case two are broken and love is the third
