Strange telephone calls

My telephone rang, I answered it, and an automated voice said "Please hold". A few seconds later the line cut off. Has anyone else experienced this sort of call, and do you know what it is all about?

it's one of those swithcboards that connect to a call and then automatically get one of the salespeople to speak to you when they are the next available operator, sign up for the TPS online see earlier thread

actually i moved here 2 weeks ago and had forgotten to re-register with this new phone number and so i've just done that, do you know the most complicated address change has been the electoral roll!

I have on a few occasions. I have got on to my telephone providers and the calls are coming from abroad and they are still trying to trace the caller.
Oddly enough I have had 2 calls recently asking to speak to my mother recently.
She passed away 6 years ago. When I said that they just put the phone down.
Another thing which happened at my previous address on a different telephone number was I was getting a call from a fax machine in the middle of the night.
I borrowed my friends fax machine to see if any faxes would come through.
It turned out to be an error by a company in Australia.
