varnished wood ceiling

I have a varnished wooden ceiling in my bathroom, very nice light pine, but oh want s to paint it and then paint the walls and pine panels in bright colours. is this a good idea? I have explained that once it is painted, then thats it, the pine effect is gone forever, so it better be something we can live with.

we found this in a house we bought and decided to remove it and have the usual plaster ceiling - this might have entailed some repair work - not sure. But the wood seemed very dated and the bathroom seemed much brighter and fresher without the wood.

I didn't paint my wood panels on a wall but I stained them. So I have the colour but can still see the grain of the wood.

My house was built in 1888. I have a small drawing-room with a pine strip wooden ceiling where some previous owner painted over the original varnish with white. I wish they hadn't. Totally ruins an otherwise super period finish.

Unlike Heathy's ceiling, Percy, I guess your's has the varnished TG&V "matchboard" that was so popular a few years ago. Because of ultra violet, it usually turns orange and looks dated.

Hi builder,
it still is looking clear varnished, but you are right , it is the t and g matchboard stuff. Dated, it is, so the new bright paint colours will soon be on it.

I can't imagine wood is ever "dated". Much of the time when I decorate a room, removing the paint so I can see the natural wood, is part of the beautification process.

Is painting over it a good idea ? As far as I am aware the only downside is likely to be the demonstration to your guests of your controversial taste.

OG ............... it's not the wood that's dated........... it's the finish ;o)

You'll have to use a specialised primer such as Dulux super grip, otherwise the paint will peel-off, especially in a bathroom. Wash it down before you paint as well.
