slogger has come to the rescue of another struggler. the answer to 9 across is APOMIXIS. My question contained an error because I had NEWQUAY for the intersecting 6 down - it should have been TORQUAY, thus replacing the E with an O. Sorry for the mistake folks and thanks again.
