Will sheltered children rebel?
32 Answers
One of the panel members on Channel 5s 'The Wright Stuff' this morning was Shazia Mirza, a comedienne born in Birmingham of Pakistani Muslim parents. She said that as a child she was not allowed to invite school friends to her home, and was never allowed to go anywhere alone until she went to university aged 18. Once she got there, because of the restrictions that had been placed upon her throughout her childhood, with her newly found independence she ‘went wild’. Hence, she feels that children should be given more freedom to make their own decisions and taught to take more responsibility for themselves.
This week the courts are hearing the case of parents accused of killing a daughter who allegedly failed to conform to their wishes, so the question is will those Muslim children who are necessarily members of our liberal society but who are nevertheless raised under a strict regime at home eventually rebel against their sheltered upbringing - as Shazia Mirza did?

If I teach my children about my “culture” and tell them to accept all of that as “religion” then they may later find some sort of freedom (as you mentioned). However if I will teach them about my religion “Islam of course” and tell them about negatives of my own cultural and then explain to them that religion should get priority if it clashes with culture, then if I should give them time and place to talk to me instead of telling them “just accept it” and if I spend more energies towards my family instead of towards earning “a bit more money” like many people do. Then my kids will never be exposed to anything they never knew about and never will find any freedom they never had before. However if you have believe that just following your desires “right or wrong” is known as freedom then obviously you are wrong. And still to “your disappointment” I will not stop my kids from following their desires “right or wrong” but would definitely warn them of the consequences. And guess what? Even that is according to my religion.

Keyplus, ‘disappointment’? Dream on. It’s happening. Intelligent Muslim children, born in the west and educated along with others in mainstream schools, are not going to be content to be drowned in your 7th century philosophy. They have opportunities – and I sincerely hope they have the wherewithal to seize them with both hands. You may ‘warn them of the consequences’ according to your religion – which I presume means you will tell them they are going to hell - but there’s every chance that they won’t accept it– just as they won’t be foolish enough to ignore reality and accept that the science of the Koran is accurate – and good for them! You are exposing them to an education and to a culture that is alien to your own - and you are not going to be able to hold back the tide.
Allah shows the right path to whoever he wishes. People can only look for it. If my kids would not be Muslim tomorrow that is not my problem. I have and am doing whatever I believe is good for them. However if they would believe otherwise then its their life.
In other words I can't talk about individuals and my own kids are individuals too. However I am prepared for whatever would come in the future as Quran gets me ready for that too. But I do hope you would be able to cope when any of your children (if you have one) would tell you that "mom I have decided to convert to Islam". Because looking at the ground realities there is more possibility of that happening here in the West. You do not even have a prescribed way of life for you to mentally prepare for it.

No chance of that, Keyplus.

What ground realities?
//You do not even have a prescribed way of life for you to mentally prepare for it. //
A prescribed way of life? Prescribed by whom?
No chance of that, Keyplus.

That tells me about few possibilities.
1 – You have completely suppressed your kids and you will never give them a choice. Something you always blame others (mainly religious) people. Am I surprised after knowing about your mentality for over 4 years. Not at all.
2 – You have shut your eyes and dug your head in sand and hope that it would not happen to you. Most likely is the case.
3 – You call yourself open minded but in reality you can’t even imagine that a scenario may occur. Look at my post and I have accepted that it may happen. What you are doing is also known as hypocrisy.
4 – And finally it tells me that I was right in assuming that you would not be mentally prepared. And you aren’t, thanks for confirming that.
And now over to you so that you could have the final say (as usual).
