Nearly there BUT I still have PUB (something and ANCHOR?) not beef, discomfiture, trouble , financial backing to find + the last pair - possibles DIN? MAGES (games?) CH? ?ARITE ?OSE . Any ideas or hints gratefully accepted
'not beef' in the sense of don't complain. Answer is a phrase meaning to be stoic in adversity. X and Y, where Y is two words which is your anagram.
Your pair from the amended letter is a (vague) clue to an across answer and to the title of the puzzle. Think 2xT and ?ose
Can anyone put me out of my misery? I have most of the pairs and their respective anagrams and association entries. All I have left is din?, m?ges, ?ose and ?arite. I am looking for two pairs that satisfy the definitions of Trouble and not beef. Also have the island pair but can't associate it with a normally clued across answer. Help!
Not beef = grin and bear it. This gives 'barite' (the anagram part) and 'cha'(the grin part, chagrin, not very good!) The '?ose' follows an item of clothing (TT[from the islands], double?...+?ose).
I chose 'hose' because of 'doublet' - the only link I could come up with. I highlighted 'clothes' - partly because of 'hose', but also because of the puzzle's title.
doublet and hose is cockney rhyming slang for 'nose', but like the other associations one partner is associated b with another word. I googled tobago and found tobago rose.
