Double Glazing

Hi all, I'm just after some info from any of you that have had replacement windows fitted recently. I've been quoted by a few of the major companies and would just like to get a rough idea of the kind of prices any of you have paid, so I can make a more informed decision. I live in a bog standard three bed semi we want ten windows and a back door, so if any of you have had similar fitted recently Id really appreciate a rough guide to what you may have paid. Get a few quotes and haggle haggle haggle with them-we got qouted anything from 10.000 to 7.000 for two big bay windows, big bay with french doors in, and 4 flat ones if you keep saying its to expensive theyl come down a lot, you have to be patient and let him believe you want them -but at a good price -if you know what i mean.

Oh btw we got them in the end for �6000 after hed been at our house for three hours! fitted in 4days 3 men and the windows are perfect -no probs at all- if you know anyone whos had them fitted see if they can reccomend anyone

I don't have any prices but once you've got a rough idea, I'd recommend you walk/cycle/drive around your area and look for any similar type houses that have had replacements - have any of your neighbours had theirs done recently? Knock on doors, explain and ask who did the work, were they happy with it, would they recommend them, how much did it cost - you may well find it was a small local company with a decent reputation to maintain.

Only one problem with dealing with a small local company - if that's the route you decide to go. Ask yourself, with the current economic climate in the downturn, whether they will still be around in ten years time if you need them to honour their 10 year warranty (which I believe is normal for a reputable double glazing company). We made that mistake once with a patio window & when we had problem, discovered they had gone broke. So when we had the whole house reglazed we went with one of the big national companies just to be on the safe side. One problem with double glazed windows is that the rubbergaskets sealing the glass panels can start to rot or leak. If that happens you will get condensation between the two glass frames and have to replace the windows as it can't be cured so you may well need your supplier to be around to honour that 10 year warranty.

Just to say a big thanks to everyone that answered...like I said we had many quotes...some of them here for four hours or more. Our highest quote was 12 grand...we weren't to be moved and finally went with one of the major companies who we beat down to four grand. Your advice and comments were much appreciated. Thank you.
