999 or 112

If it looked like a fight was about to start, would I dial 999 or 112 or doesn't it make any real difference? (Didn't know which category to put this under.)

I think if you are living in United Kingdom it is 999. It is different in the USA but I am not sure what it is. Where did you get 112 from sher?

I thought 112 was the non-emergency number (to stop people phoning 999 for non-emergencies).

You can use 112 from a mobile phone, it will put you through to a police despatcher.

I think 112 is the emergency number in France. In the US I think it's 911.

999 is the standard UK number but 112 will do just as well.
I used to be an operator and calls that came through on the 112 number could be sent over to the GPS team if they were on mobile to be traced for location. I don't know if that is still the case but if I was stranded on a hillside somewhere I'd definitely call 112.

I think that 112 is the universal mobile emergency number - sure I read that somewhere.
