Bookshop 'bungs'

There's been quite a bit in the press recently about publishers paying bookshops for recommendations and displays. Was anyone out there aware of this? Do any of you buy books 'recommended' bookshops? If so, do you feel cheated?

It's also common practice with record retailers - record companies buy chart positions, display space, recommendations etc. all the time. Surely we're all media-savvy these days and knew that all along??
