Mrs Slimand I only have the time and money to go to one day of the festival this year. WIth our ever-increasing years, we're growing more and more out of touch with the music scene. What will be the best day to attend for a couple who were brought up on 'older' rock (Quo thru to G'n'R)? Or do regular visitors have an opinion on which is usually the best day regardless of the music? Go to www.readingfestival.com for the lineups.

Quo?! That's a brave admission! Anyway, being at *least* as old as you and trying desperately to find decent new music in this Pop Idol age of ours, the best band on the bill that you may not have heard may well be the Datsuns (Friday, main stage) who are Led Zep-meets-AC/DC with balls. Or possibly the Thrills (Radio 1 stage, Saturday) who are Byrds-meet-mature-Beach Boys.

You should also enjoy Electric Six, Mull Historical Society (Friday), thr Kills (Sat), Grandaddy, Hot Hot Heat, Radio 4, (Sunday).

As for headliners (most of whom I'm assuming you know) Friday's would make me run a *very* long way away and I'd be too embarrassed to buy a ticket with their names on; Beck and White Stripes might just make blur bearable; Sunday I would have to leave after Primal Scream.
