Why have the government not started to print a Greenback Pound?

It's nonsense of course.
For the last 300 years governments have borrowed money to achieve various purposes.
In order to do this they issue "guilts" promises to pay interest at certain stages against loans.
This is effectively not repaying loans - a Soverign default - much like what Greece has just rejected.
If you default on your existing loans nobody will lend to you and you'll very rapidly run out of money, Police, Nurses, Soldiersand all manner of public sector workers won't get paid.
The only solution is to print more and more money resulting in hyper inflation

The idea isn't a lot different from quantitative easing, which we are doing now, just as Germany did in the days of the Weimar Republic.
