I was looking at an old episode of Minder yesterday and "Arfer" was giving an after dinner speech to a group of people and needless to say he got a little on the intoxicated side, he began by saying "I've been knocking my pipe out for the last 40 years" so is this a saying that only Londoners use? & what does it mean?

It means working hard or going to a lot of effort.
