Peugeot 306 charging problem

My wife's peugeot 306 diesel ran its battery down last week. Tried a charge offline, good for a day. (no sign of a warning light, by the way). Changed battery, worked for a day or so. Established that there is no charge going in (from the measured voltage at the battery), so tried a new alternator. No change; even with a separate lead from the battery to the exciter terminal, still no output at the battery. Any ideas??

Try changing the battery, it sound's to me like you have a dead cell. So the alternator is trying to charge the battery, hence no warning light. Measure the power across the battery first, you could be surprised!

Sounds like something is shorting to earth or an bonnet or boot light staying on all the rtime running down the battery.

You say you changed the battery, was it a good known working battery?

How did you work out no the battery wasn't being charged? if the battery is being drained at same time it is being charged voltage will keep dropping? also if the alternator has a seperate regulator box type thing, sounds like that could be shagged?
