For months now I've had pain through my right thigh/buttock. Normally it's just a dull ache but the past couple of days it's been worse, like shooting pains.

I went to the doctor a while back and she diagnosed sciatica and gave me some tablets. They didn't really do alot but I didn't go back because it' wasn't too painful.

I noticed yesterday I was getting the pains when walking/moving but today I'm sitting still and still getting it. (It's not excrutiating, more uncomfortable).

Is it more likely it's something muscular?

You are not describing what i have always considered to be sciatica and i rather agree with you that the pain is muscular in origin.

I would suggest an Nsaid, eg Ibuprofen when and as necessary.

Thanks Sqad. I didn't sound to me like other peoples description of sciatica too. I'm happy to continue just taking painkillers when I need. Can you suggest any sort of movement/excercize that might help get rid of it?
Evian......physio is not my forte ;-) but I would have thought that when woolfgang sees your post, she will make some relevant suggestions.

\\\\and I thought you were a hands on man :) \\\

LOL.....depends upon which parts needs the "hands on."
Evian, the good doctor is evidently not a buttocks or thighs man then.
;-)
evian, i seem to have a similar problem, so will also wait for woolfgang advice. mine was self inflicted, i ran 10 miles without doing any stretching exercises, and i am paying for it now. its worse when i sit down, goes away when i stand up.
