Lapsed Tenancy
Hi everyone ,
Just wonder if anyone would be able to help at all - my brother and I have been living in the shared house for over 4 years sharing with 1 other . My brother was responsible for the rental collection and subsequent payment to private landlord ( there is no tenancy agreement in place ) . 3 months ago payments lapsed ( cancelled SO in error) however the landlord never got in touch ( and we do not have his /her details as the i phone where all this information was stored has been lost ) . We never re instated the payments ( my brother has now moved out with his girlfriend ) but I really am not comfortable with this situation and not certain of the best way of action here. I was trying to dig on the net but couldn't find anything that would be relevant in this situation - I would therefore appreciate any suggestions/comments/advice.

Even if there is no written tenancy agreement, there will be a tenancy in place - albeit verbal & therefore with terms which are difficult to determine. However, paying the rent is bound to be an essential term so you are right not to want to leave this. I've known of a landlord who didn't chase up unpaid rent for nearly a year & then demanded the lot in one go!
2. If Bednobs suggestion doesn't bear fruit you could do a land registry search (use the gov.uk site - not one of the expensive co.uk ones) to try & find the landlord's name & address.
3. You probably realise now that it's not a good idea to keep this sort of information on just one small device which can get lost/stolen - always best to keep it in paper form as a back-up to a computer or phone.
