I have just got back from my place of work after watching a Spitfire being put through it's paces. The sound of that Merlin engine still does it for me.

awesome...
Teriffic engine.
Sometimes there is an airshow near us, and I can tell instantly when there is a Merlin in the air near to us.
My son in law will be after one of those engines to put in his Nova next.
Lancaster came over quite low when I was down in Essex a few days ago ... now that does make your fillings rattle and your hair stand on end :)
Oh yes.

I have heard that sound many times, at air shows and flying over London at state occasions, it's wonderful.
I`ve been in that Lancaster that`s still flying. It`s incredibly claustrophobic. I managed to climb into the glass dome at the front beyond the flight deck. The rear gunner was quite isolated and must have felt very vulnerable.
I never thought I would say this to a Baggies fan, but thanks Hopkirk, those Merlin engines are music to my ears.
We've seen the BoBMF on several occasions and I'm not ashamed to admit it but the the sight and sound of those grand birds always brings a tear to my eye at the thought of the boys that flew them when we really needed them.
Someone commented that every generation has its young, foolhardy men who love speed and are oblivious to danger.

These days they tear around in Novas and Citroen AXs, often wrapping them round trees.

However the same traits saved this country when they were given Spitfires and Hurricanes in the early forties.
Merlin engines do it for me too!
If anyone is interested there's a documentary coming up on "Yesterday" on Sky tv next Thursday at 9.00 called "Who Betrayed the Bomber Boys" all about how the men who flew the bombers over the enemy in the last war were shunned after the war. It's about time their role in the war was acknowledged, and why it's taken so long to give them a proper memorial. They are as deserving of recognition as were the Fighter pilots and everyone else who fought against fascism.
Spot on Moony :)

My father built spitfires in the Midlands. When I was in the jewellers today (are you sure you can afford that beautiful diamond ring?) I bought a lovely little silver spitfire - it just took my eye. There is a spitfire museum at Bournemouth Airport - fantastic stuff.
The old Spitfire factory at Castle Bromwich builds Jaguar cars now.
