My bathroom tiles are a total mess. Some tiles have holes in them and some are only attached to the surrounding tiles (and not the wall). I don't want to re-tile the room at present.

Is it possible to have some sort of sheet of plastic/or whatever put over the walls involved?

Yes I think there is wolf, I am sure I have seen some tile effect plastic sheeting, cut to size. Sorry I just can't remember where I have seen it. Maybe try google.
Yes, there are several products now that are an alternative to tiles. It would have to be over the whole wall though, or it might look strange. Fixing could be right through the existing tiles, and into the wall behind.
For now, I'd be inclined to pull off the loose tiles, re-glue them, and fill the odd holes with grout.
You can use of some plastic sheets. It will be quite helpful.

I've seen vinyl floor covering used in a bath/shower area. It worked as well.
Using of some plastic sheet is one of the best and helpful idea. There are some wall papers are also available to use.
