DoI leave the battery in my laptop even though I mostly use the mains? I seem to get conflicting advice about this. Many thanks.

If you take the battery out you've got no protection against momentary loss of power which may cause data loss or corruption and also in a lot of laptops the battery adds a lot to the structural strength of the chassis and without it the whole laptop can twist easily.
