undisclosed number 141

When you phone a number I think that you can put 141 infront of the number you dial (or a landline or mobile - I think) and this will make your phone number undisclosed to the person you call. But is there a way to make your home phone or mobile number undisclosed to everyone that you ring?

Sorry to ask this - but someone seems to have done this to my mum's phone. And I am not sure how to change it.

No its not ex-directory.

Were your mum's number a business number I think one may ask BT for permanent 141; but I don't think it should be possible for a domestic number. Not that I've ever asked. Could be a corrupt setting by BT (or whoever) though.

You can ask BT (or talktalk or sky or whoever) to 'withhold number' on all outgoing calls - they must do this if you ask.

On some phones you can set a prefix to be dialled before every call - someone may have set this to 141 in your case?

No one knows it is mum ringing as its an undisclosed number which is a real nuisance.

If you dial 1470 before the number it 'releases' your own number - but you have to do this each time you dial.

My number does that but I aked BT to do it. Thanks sunny-d I never knew that, I've just tried and you're right!

on my talk talk account i have the option to withhold my number as default, maybe that is the problem

On Talktalk you can go to your account, select manage boosts, and choose whether to hide your number or not.

yes that's what i meant marty, i've also found on there i can have 500 minutes to call mobiles for a few quid, it's good that is.
