How do you become an ed? Do you have to train up, or is it something that you're born into, a job passed down from generation to generation?

no no no, when the old Ed passes on, a group of monks fast and chant and are given a vision of where the new Ed will be. They go out and make a perilous journey taking with them the old Ed's robe and beermug. When they find the person that they believe is the reincarnation of Ed, they offer him or her the robe and beer mug. if he or she says "this is empty, so where's the beer?" and "whose nicked me chocolate, I know I left half a bar in me robe pocket," then they bear him or her back to the monastery amid great rejoicing....thought everyone knew that!!

Actually, Eds are imported from the former colonies in batches (only one is used at a time mind, the rest are loaned out to Google as management consultants). When I've reached my banning quota I will be released into the wild with only a rucksack containing two burritos and a generic Leatherman.
