On my desk top I have a short cut to a folder of mostly pictures. Now it shows one of the pictures in the icon. Can I effect which picture it chooses or is it purely random? thanks

yes you can change it, right click and choose properties at the bottom ,there will be a box to change the icon and you can browse for another picture from your folder

Thanks but when click that it demands that I allocate an icon. If I try and select a picture in the folder it won't let me because it says it's not an Icon. The default seems to be the classic folder icon with minature copy of one of the actual pictures interleaved. I would like to change it to a different picture from the folder. I can select another icon this way but that's not really what I'm trying to do.
In my version of Windows (7), I go to 'Properties' and then 'Customise'
DON'T go as far down as the 'Change Icon' option.
In the centre it says 'Choose a file to show on this folder icon' and then a button that says 'Choose File'. That lets you browse for your choice.
