Blood Pressure

My sister had a new doctor and she was called in to have her blood pressure taken. She went to roll up the sleeve of her jumper to allow this to be done, and the doctor said, that there was no need for that, she could do it over her clothing. Does anyone know if this is correct as before she has always had to wear a short sleeved jumper or roll up her sleeve.

Not sure. My doctors have a BP machine so you can take it while you wait. Always have to roll up sleeves.

I think the thinking is that taking blood pressure by applying the cuff over a single, thin piece of clothing is as statistically accurate as applying the cuff to the bare arm.

So its probably more down to doctor preference and experience more than anything else.

There have been quite a few studies looking at this, and none have found any statistical difference, to my knowledge.

I personally take BPs over thin clothing .....its as accurate, or so i was taught...a thick jumper or housecoat etc obviosly should be removed...xxx

My doc has taken my BP over a long sleeved t-shirt a couple of times. He seemed happy enough with the results
