I agree with Eddiecurrent. Start off with a cheap car. A 3yr old Clio is lovely but its his first car, he has little experience and would be more peeved if he ruined his nice new car than a older one.
Start off with a cheaper car, build up NCB, then get a better car once he has more experience and confidence. I would keep away from Direct Line, I have had bad experiences with them, they suck! Try Churchill or Admiral. I used to have admiral before I sold my car and they were excellent. My partner has churchill and they are very good.
