What wifi speed can I expect from my pc network adapter?

It is a Realtek RTL8191SE Wireless LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC and the Virgin engineer has told me I am not getting the 60mg speed I am paying for because my wireless adapter can't reach that speed.

I am smelling pork pies. Any idea?

My brother has had a similar problem recently. His Virgin Fibre-Optic cable terminates just outside his home and the signal comes through to the house on a copper cable. His plugged his Windows 7 laptop directly into the wireless router and got 60MB straight away. But when he tried to connect wirelessly to his XP PC upstairs, the signal dropped dramatically. He needed a PCIe card like yours to get up to speed and it did.
I suspect that the problem starts at the router and the way you're connected. The router should be the same 802.11n standard and should be connected directly to the Master socket and, which is the first point of entry from the cable outside and not elsewhere in the house via an extension lead socket.

It's Virgin's own Superhub - a modem/router in one and it is connected to the master socket.

I am convinced it is faulty

In that case, I'm inclined to agree. One way to check is connect a friend's laptop and see is they also get the same problem.

Remember that wireless speed decreases as signal strength decreases, so if you have a low signal strength you'll get a low speed.

If you open the properties for the wireless connection it should say what speed you are actually connected at.

Speed is really dire when laptop is immediately next to the 'Superhub'. Virgin has agreed to send me a new one.

I thought the engineer was talking broccoli.
