TV licensing
My TV licence expired on Oct 1st. Because I am leaving the country in a few months I wanted to purchase a 6 month licence but have been told that thats not possible and I have to eaither pay for 12 then get a refund on the un-used months or pay monthly at the post office.
The later sounds like the best option but TBH I'm seriously considering not paying it due to their total lack of alternative options.
I'm more than happy to pay it's just that I can't see why I can't give them my credit card and buy 6 months. Simple. No?

At first, I think that they charge you twice the expected rate per month, so that at the end of a year, you have paid off your that year's License, and also the next year's License in advance. However, if you cancel it after, say three or four months, you will have paid sufficient for 6 months worth.
They will chase you at this point, but in theory, you are licensed pro-rata to what you have paid. It saves trying to claim a refund whilst you are not in the country.
