Does anyone know how one stands if you are a full time employee and you want to work part time, with no small children at home ? Do they have to allow it, or is it only if they are amenable.

Your employer doesn't have to grant flexible working to people with children, never mind those without. Put your request in anyway and see what they say. If they refuse, and you don't think their reason is a good one, you can raise it again through whatever grievance procedure you have in your place of work.
Or you can just go ahead and do the part time work as long as ur fulltime employer dono ever find out about it and u can handle the workload. Otherwise, be content with what you can contribute and what you can earn.

Reorganising the hours of work is a contractual matter between employer and worker, but you have a right to request it, whether you are a parent or not. If you have a justifiable reason to want to work part time and they can accommodate the reduced hours, then I am sure they will consider it. However, they are not legally bound to agree to it.

do you know another equally qualified person who could work the other half of your job? this may make them feel you are considerate and care and they may be amenable - and save them the bother of recruiting someone to make up the hours


if, as someone mentioned, this is about doing part time as well as your usual job, then it is none of your current employers business what you do in your spare time

joko is not correct that it isn't your employers business what you do in your spare time. If your contract has an exclusive employment clause then you would need the company's permission to take on an additional job in your spare time.
Half of these answers assume that you are in a job working full-time, but wish to continue in that job but working only part-time. The other half of the answers assume that you are working full-time and wish to get an additional (part-time) job. Which is it?
